About Cathleen Waters
Cathleen Waters is a multilingual anthropologist living in New York City. She has worked as a language specialist and cultural consultant in the marketing research and translation industries for over ten years. Cathleen holds a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Latin American and French languages and literatures, and a Master’s Degree in French literature and diasporic culture from the University of Delaware. Drawing on these interests, she took a Master’s Degree in anthropology from Columbia University, choosing to explore problems of culture and language in qualitative research, within both the anthropological and marketing research schools of thought.
Today, Cathleen consults in health care, business, and legal fields, as well as in the arts. Her work touches on subjects including cultural communication, cultural relevancy, and translation, and her projects have ranged from messaging and positioning for erectile dysfunction drugs in markets across the world to translating and writing subtitles for film and television. She works as a qualitative moderator in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese and a simultaneous interpreter of French and Spanish for focus groups, depositions, trials and patient-doctor visits. In 2005, Cathleen founded the language services firm New World Medium, which employs the expertise of a network of professional linguists whose native languages are represented from Arabic to Zulu and who specialize in various industries.
Cathleen is fluent in Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish and English.
